McCormick Place is located in Chicago, IL, about 2.5 miles south of downton Chicago, IL next to Lake Shore Drive and Lake Michigan. The building has consists of four buildings and is the largest convention center in North America. The convention center host a large number of events all year round. The most notable of these events are the Chicago Auto Show, International Home and Housewares Show, and the National Restaurant Association show. Robert R. McCormick, a member of the McCormick family, promoted the idea of a convention center as early as the late 1920's. In 1958, construction was started and the 35 million dollar convention center was completed in 1960. The buildings lead architect was Alfred Shaw, one of the same individuals that built Merchandise Mart.
The McCormick Place convention center attracts almost 3 million visitors each year. The center consists of four buildings: North building, South building, West building, and Lakeside Center building. The convention center has 2.6 million square feet of space, 170 meeting rooms, assembly seating for 18,000 people, 3 theaters, 3 parking lots, and 5,800 parking spots. The McCormick Place convention center has a large concourse that includes a retails shops, cafes, restaruants, and other visitor needs. The Hyatt McCormick Place is the only hotel connected to the covention center over a skybridge.
