Chicago's Midway International Airport is located in the southwest portion of Chicago adjacent to Oak Lawn and Cicero. Formerly named Chicago Airpark, Midway was originally built in 1923 for mostly airmail transportation. In 1929, the City of Chicago leased the airport and renamed in Chicago Municipal Airport. In July of 1949, the airport was renamed Chicago Midway Airport after the World War II Battle of Midway. By 1959, the airport had serviced over 10 million passengers.
Midway is Chicago's secondary aiport as it is smaller in size, number of patrons who visit, and number of airlines that service the airport. Closer to Chicago than O'hare; however, midway serves as a convenient way to fly from Chicago for millions of passengers a year!
Located only eight miles from Chicago's loop, the airport is owned by the City of Chicago and operated by the Chicago Department of Aviation.
